I am worried my tooth will become infected

February 25th, 2013
Q.

My tooth was broken so when I visited the dentist yesterday he attempted to remove the tooth a bit at a time. Due to how painful it was and after several injections he stopped half way through and said I would need to see a specialist which would take a few weeks. I now feel I have a gaping big hole in my gum and half a broken tooth. I’m really worried about it becoming infected as it feels like an exposed wound. I know that had it been removed completely I wouldn’t be worrying but I can’t see how I can wait so long to see a specialist when my gum feels so exposed. I’m too scared to eat anything. Can I suggest what I should do please

Will my dentist judge me if he see’s the state of my teeth?

January 27th, 2012
Q.

HELLO Dr I’m having problems with my teeth more and more frequently with the same one it’s one of the larger teeth towards the back on the right. It’s aches consistently and on occasion I get a stabbing pain in it that really halts whatever i am doing! I want to have this problem addressed for obvious reasons but I feel the dentist will be judging me for not keeping my teeth in brilliant nick. I’ve had the same dentist for ever and he always commented on how nice my teeth were when I was younger- for him to see them like this now… I think he would be severely miffed! makes me think, who’s teeth are these but I can’t help it!

Where do you start when trying to help a dental phobia patient?

January 20th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr Simon. I am 19 and have suffered for long enough as far as im concerned. I am going to dedicate my upcoming project at Uni into looking at ways to treat/aid dental phobia patients. This subject is very close to my heart as i myself suffer dental phobia. I would like an idea from yourself as to how to begin to get over dental phobia. how would you determine what action to take and where would you start, is there a common class/routine/,method etc that I can get involved in to help myself before trying to then help others? thanks Dr

Should I undergo treatment to have my wisdom tooth removed?

January 16th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I have a wisdom tooth which I want to get rid of as its causing a lot of pain and has done for a few months now. but underneath it I have empty space and also, my bottom jaw is forward then the top one which means I require 2 surgeries to fix it but it means having braces for nearly 4 years!! I am not sure if I could go through all of that i really really hate the dentist and though i do not expect you to inform me of any other treatment (i assume this is the only one) i do hope you can give some advice on how to get through this whole procedure.

Will fillings at the tops of my teeth be really visible?

January 16th, 2012
Q.

Dear Simon, I noticed that on my top canines and premolars that the gum and enamel were not meeting, there is a space of dentin/root exposed that is very sensitive. I have spoken to dentists and periodontists and they said it needs a filling. It’s not decayed but they think possibly that it is partly an abfraction as well as I do grind my teeth. It’s so frustrating as I’m only 25, I look at other people’s teeth who are my age and none of them have this problem!! I’m so concerned that the filling would be really visible, I haven’t smiled properly in a year and I want to be able to smile again. Can white fillings be made to look invisible? Would I need to get veneers in order to get the right result? I really don’t want to as I like the shape of my teeth!
regards,

I have not visited the dentist for over 25 years due to dental phobia. Can you advise?

January 4th, 2012
Q.

I have not been to the dentist for over 25 years due to my phobia. I have lost a number of teeth now and am becoming anxious and nervous about going to a dentist. My front lower teeth are turning black and obviously this will affect my appearance which also concerns me. Not sure where to turn as I also have serious concerns over costs.

Despite having no obvious reason I have always been terrified of the dentist, what should I do?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

dear Dr Nery, I have struggles with going to the dentist for as long as i can remember and have tried to think whether I have any particular reason for this and i cant think of one. I am trying to get to the bottom of my fear and have even sat down and had talk with my mum about it1 as to whether or not I had had anything done as a child ie: before I can remember. and apparently not as a child all I can gather is that everything went smoothly? the normal things like the noise of a drill don’t bother me. everytime i have been though the anxiety got worse- from not being there to being evident to now stopping me going. I really want to do something about it but don’t know how. is there first of all anything you would suggest and secondly what would you do to try and treat a patient like myself if i had just come to the surgery looking for help?

After cancer and all that comes with it I need to sort my teeth out but don’t like dentists, what can I do?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hi I was diagnosed with cancer 8 years ago and went through chemotherapy, during this period i had a number of side effects one of which was extensive vomitting, and recently i have had to go through further radiotherapy which caused the same side effect. this has led to very bad teeth erosion, where some of my teeth are wasting away and some broken. i am very embarrased with this and have feared visiting a dentist, i would love to smile again and have nice teeth but the embarassment and fear off going to a dentist has overtaken me. Could you please advise if there is treatment available so i am able to have a nice smile again, i am still fairly young (37) and feel am at the point where i am prepared to go to a dentist now who is understanding.
