I suffer from anxiety when I have things in my mouth

March 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Pinder,
I suffer from anxiety when it comes to having things in my mouth. I start to become anxious and feel as though I can’t breath and then panic sets in. I am ok with a regular check-up but when it comes to things like fillings where there’s all this stuff in your mouth i really can’t cope. My dentist is ok and we have a sign which means I want him to stop but treatment takes ages which alsmost makes it worse. I have missed my last two appointments for a filling because I cant face it, but of course the filling is getting worse and is becoming more and more sensitive. I really don’t know what to do, i just find the whole experience horrifying.I can’t carry on like this but I don’t know how to overcome my fear, it just takes over me.

Do I need teeth to be extracted before braces treatment?

March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr. Jennifer Pinder,
I’m 16 and I have been told i need braces. I have an overbite and haven’t gotten braces yet – and I don’t have access to regular dental checkups.
um… my teeth have otherwise been very healthy, with only 1 cavity. I had four molars [1st teeth] removed by a dentist as they were blocking each other. i already have a retainer/mouthguard thing because I have a problem with grinding my teeth…
I have started to grow wisdom teeth, but the wisdom teeth [or the area at the back of my mouth] has always had quite large balls of gum. my bottom wisdom teeth haven’t emerged from there, even though have been growing for 2 years. I can feel the points through the gum…
Do I need to have the wisdom teeth removed before i get braces, and what kind of surgery will they give me?
Even if they do take the wisdom teeth out, there is still that extra gum. WIll they remove that too or stick hooks into it for my braces?
Thank you – I hope I haven’t rambled and that I’ve put in enough information…
Esther :)

I have had bad experiences with my dentist

March 20th, 2013
Q.

I’m a 20 yr old student in Scotland, I’ve had the same dentist all my life and in the past couple of years I’ve had quite a lot of work done. It’s not the work that scares me its the dentist himself. The last time i was there, which would’ve been 6 months ago, after I’d had 2 fillings he took an old brush he’d had somewhere and sorta brushed my teeth.. without anything on it ofc, it was quite rough, and it made me gag. That added with my numb jaw so i couldnt swallow trying to balance all the liquids and then he flossed my teeth and ofc they bled and he yelled at me for them bleeding and then he handed me said floss/brush/some toothpaste and sent me off. He’s belittled me in the past but after that – i have a check up in 2 days – and i really see myself cancelling it tomorrow. I don’t see how i can go

How can I overcome my needle phobia?

March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I have a severe dental phobia and needle phobia. My dental phobia started when I was 10 or 11 (I’m 25 now) I needed a filling but as I’m terrified of needles I had a panic attack when the dentist said she was going to give me an injection so she told me she could do it without the injection, she caused me a lot of pain and ignored me repeatedly when I put my hand up,which we had agreed would be our stop signal it took my mum to get up an tap her on the shoulder to get her to stop. I refused to go the dentist after that an just walking by a dentist would start a panic attack off. I had a check up when I was 18 which was a terrifying experiance, rather embarressing too as I sat in the chair crying barely able to breath but luckily my teeth were fine. Since then 2 of my teeth have broken 1 at the back right hand side on the top and 1 at the back on the bottom left hand side. I’ve also recently noticed I have a tiny hole in another tooth.

I went to the dentist last week after 3 days of being in agony with the bottom left hand side of my mouth, turns out I have a wisdom tooth coming threw so she put me on a 5 day course of antibiotics an I have no pain what so ever now. But I have another appointment in 2 weeks for a full check up as she didn’t do one as I was in such a state,(shaking, crying an catching my breath) despite being so proud of my self for going I’m now terrified, will she have to take the 2 broken teeth out? I mean they cause me no bother I have no pain from the at all. I’d rather she didn’t!

How long does a tooth extraction take?

March 11th, 2013
Q.

Over the last two weeks, after a piece of filling dropped out, my tooth has become increasingly painful – coming and going in waves. Being dental phobic – I approached my dentist (after six years) He took a quick look at my tooth and said – basically, I had two choices – root canal work or extraction. He seemed hurried and said I had only ten minutes to make my mind up (I had taken a cancellation appointment). He said root canal work had no guarantee on this tooth, and extraction may not be straightforward. He suggested referal to a local NHS specialist clinic that offered sedation. However he said I might have to wait several weeks for an appointment. I felt, frankly, he was in a hurry to get rid of me. I am not keen on sedation – don’t like feeling out of control in any way. In the meantime I have approached another private dentist who – according to their website – offer a very supportive service to people like myself. I am on antibiotics (which I had to ask my original dentist for) and he has applied some temporary filling to protect the tooth a bit from eating and drinking etc. I am booked in to see the new dentist next week – my question is – typically how long does a tooth extraction take? Ive read and heard about a few horror stories. My husband had a tooth extraction a few weeks ago and has tried to reassure me by saying ‘ it was done in moments’ and then the pain is gone. Are most extractions straightforward and quick? The tooth that needs to come out is on the bottom at the side – the third tooth from the left hand front one (you can tell I’m not a dentist!)

I don’t like lying in the dentists chair

March 7th, 2013
Q.

I do not like having to lie almost flat in the chair. I find it difficult to relax as I feel I’ve just got to lie there for ages and the tension gets worse and makes me feel I cannot move if I want to. I never did like lying flat in any circumstances I feel better sitting up but that is not allowed. I just need to relax am not really afraid of the procedure but the longer it goes on the more tense I am.

How can I get dental treatment with my needle phobia?

March 4th, 2013
Q.

I have a massive phobia of the dentist (ever since having too many teeth out at once) and needles. I’ve managed to overcome my needlephobia, but as soon as they go near my mouth it makes me feel faint/ pass out and the idea of going to the dentist and having work done brings me out a full on cold sweat. I currently have a filling which has partially come out, and while it’s not causing terrible pain- the tooth is beginning to become fragile and i’m now suffering pain with it more and more.

The solution, i know, is to have the filling drilled out and then refilled- but it may need to be taken out (i’m not sure i’m no dentist)

but i can’t bring myself to go to the dentist because of the mouth needles/ dental work- I know some dentists can give you IV sedation (which would be fine as i’ve managed to mostly overcome needlephobia where my skin is involved) But how do i go about getting this done? I don’t want to lose my teeth, but despite doing my best to look after them i really need to see a dentist and get this work done!

thank you!

What will happen when I get my tooth extracted?

February 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr,
I had a tooth extracted before Christmas but my dentist couldn’t get all the tooth out. He struggles for a while but said that the root wasn’t straight so would send me to hospital instead. i found the experience very traumatic with lots of needle injections over and over because I could feel him trying to remove the tooth.
My main question is, what will they do at the hospital? He said something about sedation in my hand? Could you possible explain what this all means so that I am prepared more for when I get the appointment? many thanks.
