I am worried about having a general anaesthetic

February 14th, 2013
Q.

I am terrified of the dentist, I haven’t been for a few years last march I had a broken tooth and went to a dentist. He said I needed to have it removed he tried to remove it but said he couldn’t as I would bleed too much.He referred me to two consultants one being special dental care unit as I am so anxious both referrals were sent back as I asked for a general anaesthetic. Now my dentist has referred me to a clinic that will give me sedation but I am so nervous about it. Will i still be able to swallow? I am seriously thinking of leaving it even though i am just about living on antibiotics
many thanks

Q.

hello, I’m a hypnotherapist and I have a client with dental anxiety, she is in need of treatment but she is 7 months pregnant. I am wondering if I can get her to visit the dentist would a local anaesthetic be dangerous for the baby at all? I don’t know if this will work or that the dentist will actually treat her so any advice would be greatly recieved

Would local anaesthetic be safe without adrenalin?

February 7th, 2013
Q.

Hello , my daughter is 17 , and needs a filling replaced due to a broken tooth , The dentist has said that because of my experience with local anesthetic , fast heart beat , hot face and rash , he can give her a local with out adrenalin in , are these safe ?I  have read on the internet it mentions that not having adrenalin in can make a toxic reaction to the anesthetic possible , how likely is this to happen , as this is worrying me now , many thanks for your help

I am petrified of the dentist and it makes me physically sick

February 7th, 2013
Q.

Hello. I was hit in the face a while back, they temporarily repaired my tooth. But now it needs a root canal. I had to register with a dentist. He didn’t know have petrified i am of the dentist. I have no bigger fear than my fear of the dentist. I am terrified. It took a hour to inject my mouth, which didn’t work because i was already so scared. I’m up being sick and loose control of my bowels the night before. I would rather anything happened to me, than visit a dentist. Is there anything i can do as they said i cant be put asleep. But they will put me asleep for a filling. I desperately need help. I look forward to hearing from you because otherwise I really don’t know what i am meant to do.Thank you.

Will my daughter be able to have sedation for her tooth extraction?

February 1st, 2013
Q.

My 19 year old has had some work done on her teeth at an NHS dentist in Coventry, She has had fillings last week and unfortunately the dentist was unable to complete extraction of one tooth, so only half taken out. Since this time she has developed an infection and has now been prescribed flagyl and amoxycillin. She will be referred to an oral surgeon to take out the rest of the tooth. She has asked the original dentist if sedation would be available to take the rest of the tooth and I understand that he advised her as an NHS patient she would be only offered gas. My question is would she be able to be seen by yourselves to complete extraction and would you be able to give her sedation. ? She is now very traumatised by the tooth extraction experience. Also would you have any idea of cost?

I am 15 years old and I am afraid of the dentist

January 30th, 2013
Q.

Hi I’m 15 years of age and one of my molars is dead and is very sensitive. I have tried going to the dentist but I really can’t go it’s my worst fear but it’s starting to ache and I’m scared that if I don’t sort this out in the future I may be in a lot of pain. My question is where is the nearest hospital for me to get put to sleep to have it out? I am willing to pay for it but it would be good if it was free I live in Bristol. Thank you for your time Dr Pinder and I hope that you can help me.

How can I get over my fear of sitting in the dentists chair?

January 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hello doctor,
I would really like some help with my fear of sitting in the dentists chair. Before the appointment I feel ok but as soon as I get in the chair I start to feel anxious and my heart starts beating quickly and I feel like I am going to pass out. is there a way of getting dental treatment without sitting in the chair, so maybe standing up? I am too embarrassed to ask my dentist if this is possible. Any help that you can give me would be a great help, thanks.
