I am 15 years old and I am afraid of the dentist

January 30th, 2013
Q.

Hi I’m 15 years of age and one of my molars is dead and is very sensitive. I have tried going to the dentist but I really can’t go it’s my worst fear but it’s starting to ache and I’m scared that if I don’t sort this out in the future I may be in a lot of pain. My question is where is the nearest hospital for me to get put to sleep to have it out? I am willing to pay for it but it would be good if it was free I live in Bristol. Thank you for your time Dr Pinder and I hope that you can help me.

How do I get my dental phobic 10-year-old to the dentist?

October 2nd, 2012
Q.

My daughter is 10 years old and has had a few “bad” experiences at the dentist since she was 4!. She has had two teeth extracted after injection with no problems but still was quite a big thing for her at such a young age … injections etc. She then had to have some fissure seals done and unfortunately the dentist treating her did not give her a break and because she is anxious she stopped breathing properly, and had some kind of seizure/fit in the dentist chair, it was diagnosed as a feint after investigations but the whole process has left her traumatised about visiting the dentist. I did manage to get her back there once but she wouldnt sit in the dentist chair and after the quickest examination ever she then felt dizzy and had to sit outside. I now do not know quite how to get her back to the dentist, she hasnt been for a year now and yesterday one of her baby back teeth broke in half!! I quite literally do not know what to do as it will no doubt be another visit with trauma which will reinforce her phobia…. HELP!.

Is dental phobia hereditary?

January 20th, 2012
Q.

Hi I was wondering whether it was possible to pass on/inherit dental phobia? i figured its a mental thing and that there could be a possibility of doing it? my son is 13 and currently cannot stand the dentists, he gets real anxiety before he goes and is restless when he’s there, I remember being about that age and had exactly the same problems. I am now over my fear, as the dentist I had used to offer me rewards if i didn’t kick off etc. I have been told about distraction techniques and wondered how that worked, to try and use it for him? thanks for taking the time to read this message.

My daughter has developed dental phobia at the age of 5! What can I do?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

My daughter became dentophobic at the age of 5 after a dentist tried to drill and fill a tooth without telling her what she was doing. She has since visited a number of dentists but is now 8 and still unable to let them do any work. She has had the injection but then lost the plot at the thought of the drill. She is able to rationalise that the treatment is needed and will be fine but then fear takes over. I am really reluctant to send her to hospital to have teeth pulled out that don’t need to be. Do you have any suggestions?

My son is 8 years old and is terrfied of the dentist, what should I do?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hello Doctor Pinder

Could you please recommend the best course of action for a mother with a dental phobic child? My son is 8 years old and hasn’t been to the dentists for a few years now and I feel terrible about it. I am planning to book an appointment for him and myself very soon, but the last time we went he went wild and just couldn’t sit still. He’s three years older now, but he runs away at even the mention of the dentist and my husband doesn’t help by using the dentist as a threat for when wants sweets in the supermarket.

What do you think is the best course of action and if he doesn’t need treatment what can i do then? Is sedation safe for children?

hope you can help and thanks for your time

How to do I help my dental phobic 5 year old attend the dentist?

December 9th, 2011
Q.

hello Doctor

I am looking to take me little girl to the dentist, as one of her teeth is really hurting her, but one problem-she’s terrified of the dentist, screaming and bawling and even kicking out at times. She is 5 years old and the tooth is one of her back teeth, which has been keeping her awake and just making her generally upset, so the tooth really does have to come out. I would really appreciate any help and advice you can offer doctor

thanks for reading my email
