I haven’t been to the dentist in 35 years, my tooth has fallen out and I have lump in my mouth?

May 14th, 2012
Q.

I am 50 years old and have suffered a dental phobia since an early experience (aged 5 – 9) with a dentist who believed that ‘milk teeth’ had no nerves and therefore sedation was not required. The pain was excruciating! I have not been to a dentist for nearly 35 years although I brush twice a day.
However I recently lost a front lower tooth and I have been aware of a small painless lump in the floor of my mouth which has not grown.
My job is customer focused and I have been increasingly aware from customers and colleagues that my teeth are not ‘appropriate’, especially with the gap in the front.
I get frightened and sweaty even thinking about the dentist, even during writing this e-mail!
Can you advice me of any solutions?

Regards

It’s been a decade since I went to the dentist and I don’t know what will happen if I go back?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello,

It’s been a very long time since I visited a dentist (around a decade!) & I’m absolutely terrified of trying to see one now after so long as I’m frightened about getting shouted at, I’m terrified about how much treatment my teeth might now need (although I’ve not had any toothaches, or unusual pains etc) – I do have a little gum disease which I’m trying to treat myself with brushing regularly & with special mouthwash.

How common is this sort of scenario? I want to be able to go & see a dentist & get back into the system but I’m feeling so frightened about what may happen. Help please?

Thank you!

I can’t bring myself to make an appointment at the dentist in over a year?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dear expert. I was wondering If you could help me out. I know somebody who asked advise on here that I know personally has really helped her. this has been the sole reason I am trying to tackle my fear now as I’ve seen it all but done. I was reminded that I had not had an appointment in over a year, this made me feel really bad- like i needed to amend it but I can’t?I don’t know why? I never had any bad experiences as a child I purely just cannot remember ever liking the dentist. is there anything I can do to get around this, its possibly anxiety but I don’t know? thanks

I want to help phobic patients and do my bit, where do I start, with regards to training?

April 27th, 2012
Q.

Dear Jennifer,
I have worked in dentistry for 39 years as nurse, receptionist, practice manager and operations manager. I am in the process of taking a Level 4 Counselling and Psychology and a course on Emotional Freedom Therapy. I would like to be able to help dental phobic patients within my practice. Could you suggest any other form of training I could undertake.
Many thanks
Dionne.

I seem to have a mental block that stops me going further than browsing the internet for treatment, what should I do?

April 27th, 2012
Q.

Hi Miss Pinder I have been struggling with the dentist all my life and have always accepted any treatment with a real lack of acceptance if you will. There’s currently nothing medicall wrong with my teeth but I want a nicer smile and have looked at cosmetic dentistry. I have read that ‘this and that’ (with regards to treatments) aren’t to bad etc. I like the look of it and really want to give it a go, I don’t know exactly what I’ll need, could just be whitening and a brace but I seem to have mental block that means looking on websites is about as advanced as i’ll get in the process. where should I/could I start in trying to get a go at it? thanks Dr

I am an anxious patient but mistakes at my practice made it worse, what should I do?

April 24th, 2012
Q.

I have many anxieties related to dental treatment. I have lost most of my teeth because of this.
I finally found a dentist that I am comfortable enough to go to.
The other day I went for my “prophactic” visit. The hygienist started the visit by saying “so you are here for a denture adjustment”. Right off by not knowing why I was there set off my fear. I then found out that my dentist was not even there to answer some questions I had. I was told a different dentist would see me. This raised by level of anxiety to panic and I left without being seen. Now I am too embarrasesed to even go back. I am trying to figure out a way to get past this new development in my dental phobia. Is it unreasonable to ask that I have all treatments including cleaning be performed by the dentist that I feel somewhat comfortable

I’ve always been scared of dentist but after a move and a nasty dentist I hate them even more?

April 18th, 2012
Q.

I have always been slightly scared of dental appointments but always kept up my treatment. Due to moving I have just returned in tears and very scared after my new appointment. I have an impacted upper wisdom tooth. I am in great pain and although I did get given antibiotics I have no faith in the dentist. As I am 55 I fear treatment will be needed and can’t face another dentist. I have never been made to feel so stupid and have never been shouted at by a professional before. Even though I have been recommended different dentists by friends they are not Nhs. Please could you advise what my next step could be.
