I am struggling to overcome a fear of dentist. Can you please help?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

I am struggling to overcome my fear of the dentist. I used to have a serious fear of needles and refused to have jabs at high school. I managed to overcome that fear last year when I went out to Africa as they are an absolute must. (I am not properly over them they still make me squirm but where absolutely need be I can just deal with it so long as there’s no cue and I’m jabbed and done quickly! however my fear of the dentist somewhat surpasses this. I used to think I didn’t like it as I may have needed a needle but it must obviously go beyond that? I’d like to know how to go about dealing with this please if you have any suggestions? thanks a lot in advance, your time is greatly appreciated

I haven’t seen a dentist in 20 years and my teeth are in a bad state, can you help?

February 10th, 2012
Q.

Dear Dr Pinder, I am a fifty one year old woman who hasn’t been able to visit a dentist in over 20 years mostly due to embarrassment and shame over the state of my teeth. I haven,t smiled with an open mouth for years, refuse to be photographed at the very few family events i feel i can,t get out of and hate people staring at my mouth when i talk. My mother had all her teeth taken out when she was twenty one as it seems to have been the done thing at one time and so never took much notice of her own children’s dental needs. As a result my brother and i had very poor oral hygiene and our visits to dentists over the years have been sporadic and only associated with emergencies. I know how awful my teeth look , i know i should see a dentist but find myself shaking and near to tears to even think about it. Strangely enough I have always insisted on my two daughters having regular six monthly checkups and they both have excellent teeth. My twenty one year old has yet to have a filling. I even take them to the dentist because i am at least confident about their teeth, just not my own. How do I begin to make progress?

February 9th, 2012
Q.

If i’m honest I never really looked for help as I didnt know there was all these things that can potentially help! @The problem now is theres too much choice if you will like a kid in a candy shop- but for the first time! where would I start in trying to calm my nerves. basically Its when I go into the suit I get really fidgety and break out in sweat- which has often lead to me leaving before my appointment. any advice you can give would be great, thankyou

Will my dentist judge me if he see’s the state of my teeth?

January 27th, 2012
Q.

HELLO Dr I’m having problems with my teeth more and more frequently with the same one it’s one of the larger teeth towards the back on the right. It’s aches consistently and on occasion I get a stabbing pain in it that really halts whatever i am doing! I want to have this problem addressed for obvious reasons but I feel the dentist will be judging me for not keeping my teeth in brilliant nick. I’ve had the same dentist for ever and he always commented on how nice my teeth were when I was younger- for him to see them like this now… I think he would be severely miffed! makes me think, who’s teeth are these but I can’t help it!

Where do you start when trying to help a dental phobia patient?

January 20th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr Simon. I am 19 and have suffered for long enough as far as im concerned. I am going to dedicate my upcoming project at Uni into looking at ways to treat/aid dental phobia patients. This subject is very close to my heart as i myself suffer dental phobia. I would like an idea from yourself as to how to begin to get over dental phobia. how would you determine what action to take and where would you start, is there a common class/routine/,method etc that I can get involved in to help myself before trying to then help others? thanks Dr

My dentist has told me I need to have my root canal treatment with another dentist, is this normal?

January 16th, 2012
Q.

hi i wonder if u could help me understand what my dentist was talking about, i had a big filling 30 years ago and never had a problem, I hate going to the dentists and hated this experience, since then it started to give me a lot of pain (lower molar tooth) today she said i need a root canal, she also told me that it was a very large filling with a pin running through it, she then tried to get into the cannel roots and said she could only get to one, and that i would need to see a specialist because the root canals are very tiny. she put a tempory dressing over it, im confused about what she means and how this has left me. with anything other than check ups I get really nervous/panicky this doesn’t help and I need to know what I can do, sorry Dr and thank you!
