Can I avoid needles and dental dams when having a tooth extracted?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

good afternoon Simon-
- I think I may have to have a tooth extracted. I have a real sharp/aching pain in my second to back molar on the bottom right side of my mouth, I don’t like dentists that much but I can put up with them for check-ups and even the hygienist although I have to sit up regularly and have a breather to calm down. however I cannot stand needles and even worse are those sheets/dams they put over your mouth, I cant have one of them. Can you tell me about ways of having a tooth extracted by avoiding both these things? If you could that would be great and I would greatly appreciate it, thanks

I have a pain in my tooth, if I go to the dentist will they force me to remove it?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr I would like to ask you a question if I may. I am contacting you from near Preston and as a dental phobia patient. I ave never liked going to the dentist even as a child, I cannot remember any bad incident for example, Ive just always felt the same way about them although this fear has definitely progressed over the years into more a phobia than an annoyance as was the case. the thing is I have been having a pain in my gum around the base of a tooth (second from the back on the bottom right). it is in the gum and not the tooth, the gum around this site looks a little red, will the dentist just want to extract the tooth if I go in, I feel like I’ll be committed if I go, could you help/advise please?

I can’t even bring myself to book a dental appointment, can you help?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hi JENNY. I am having difficulty booking an appointment, I am having no issues that I am aware of in terms of urgent pain or anything. I can however upon flossing feel a ridge at the bottom of one of my middle bottom teeth. I have flossets and use the spike thing at the bottom to go around my gum line. I have recently began to feel this ridge and dont know what it is. other than this I am having no problems, no tooth ache, no bleeding of the gums or anything else. the problem I have is that I have not been to the dentist for like over two nearly three years and know I should go. the thing is I cant even bring myself to book an appointment. can you help me please I get nervous and cant go up there, what can I do to overcome this?

I need my lower wisdom tooth extracted but I faint at the sight and taste of blood, what can I do?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Dear Doctor.

I have been told by my dentist that I may need to have my lower wisdom tooth extracted. I am totally dental & medical phobic. I faint at the sight/taste of blood and faint at needles. I had an incisor tooth removed a few years ago (under oral sedation, which didnt have any effect on me) and the pressure feeling frightened me to death.

Is it possible for a wisdom tooth to be extracted under GA? I would be happy to pay if this could be done privately. I don’t think that there are any medical/dental reasons for me to have it done under GA only my own phobia and reactions during dental treatment.

Questions about IV sedation :

my dental practice does not offer IV sedation, but could they refer me to another dental practice in the area that does?

Could my anxiety stop the IV medication from sedating me? I’m really worried that it wont have any effect on me, given that the oral medication (diazepam) didn’t.

I understand that I wouldn’t be totally under and that I would be able to respond to instructions, but will I feel that pressure of the extraction whilst been sedated?

How does it feel to be under IV sedation. Is there an awareness of what is happening.

If I’m not coping during the procedure, is it possible for the dentist to increase the sedative dosage to relax me further?

I will faint as the IV is being inserted into my hand and it will probably take me around 15 mins to come round from that given my anxiety levels regarding the extraction. Would it be possible for me to have maybe two separate appointments one for the needle and then another one for the procedure.

Many thanks for your time.

My 4 year old son is scared of the dentist. What can I do?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi Simon :) upon taking my young son for his second dental check-up the other day I found that he was absolutely terrified, sat in the waiting room really really anxious. I did the obvious “i’ll be in there with you nothings going to happen” etc, tried to comfort him but he was reaaally nervous! Hes just turned four and I dont understand it, I was there at his very first check up and he was fine, it was a routine check up both times- I told him you know what’s going to happen you did it before and are still alive, but though he was trying he was just really bad. neither me or his mother are bothered about dentist so its not even like he heard us talk about it. is there anything you could suggest that may help him whilst he’s still young? thank you

How would you go about diagnosing the depths of someone’s phobia and how would you start treating it?

November 8th, 2011
Q.

Dear Mrs Pinder,
I am doing a project on Denta phobias and what can be done to help patients overcome them.
I have seen that you have expertise in this certain area.
If it isn’t too much trouble i was wondering if you could provide some information for a few questions i have.

If a patient has a particularly bad phobia and won’t attend their appointments even if they needed work doing(filling), what do you do in this situation?
What training is needed to be certified in dental phobia?
Do you treat a lot of patients that have been refered as they have been untreatable elsewhere?
What are the steps you go through to understand a persons phobia and how severe it is?
Are there ways in which you can help patients overcome their fears or is sedation normally the way in which patients are treated?

Thankyou very much

I have twice woken to find an ulcer on the back of my lip, should I be worried?

November 8th, 2011
Q.

hello I was looking for advise on the web but I couldn’t find what I wanted until I found this website. I wondered if you could help me, I have recently woken up twice (not in consecutive days but over about a week) and had an ulcer in the same place! the first time I got it I popped it accidently as I pulled my lip back to try and see it. so i was surprised to see it return in time at all. I am terrified of the dentist and have really tried to put it off but this case has worried me, I don’t know what it is about the dentist its like no other place I just freeze when I go in I struggle to talk properly, no joke! just trying to the receptionist seems like my vocabulary just deserts me, makes me feel lost. I was wondering if it would be easier to start with solving this problem but don’t know where to start! could you please give me some direction to go in. thank you?
