My old dentist who I trusted completely has left the practice, now what do I do?

June 28th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I was always a little frightened of the dentist but I had a lovely dentist for years and he really cured me, he spoke to me during the treatments told me exactly what was happening etc and he was just fantastic. I found out that he was leaving a few months ago and was told that the new dentist would take care of me but when I went for a check up last week he was very blunt and he’s made me very frightened of going to the dentist again. He said I needed a filling so I have to go back for it but I’m suddenly petrified again, I’m not a confrontational person so I don’t know what to do about this irrational fear. Please help me with some advice, I really don’t know what to do. Thanks.

I am diabetic, will this affect the success rate of root canal treatment?

June 28th, 2012
Q.

Hello dr, What is the success rate of root canal treatment? I Am a diabetic. So any cuts made take longer to become healed. So I just wanted to know what would be better for me either root canal or tooth extraction ? Because if the root canal doesn’t work then i’ll have to go and have work on the same tooth again & again. That’s what i’m worrying about. Please suggest some advice for me…

Thanks for your time,

I could taste what was inside the numbing injection and it scared me! Is that supposed to happen?

June 26th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr, I’m due to have a filling and I know I have to have the injections in my gums, it’s not the actual injection that scares it it’s that last time I had an injection in my gums I could taste what was coming from the syringe. It was vile and I felt like I was choking, I was so embarrassed because I caused such a scene. Will this happen again this time? I don’t think I can handle it, I don’t know why it scared me so much and I don’t want to seem like I’m being a baby or causing a fuss, do you have any suggestions for me? Should I say something to my dentist or is this something that is simply unavoidable?

I fear that none of my teeth can be saved and I’m petrified of the dentist, what can I do?

June 26th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I expect I’m a dentists worst nightmare but really don’t know how or where to start and was hoping you could maybe point me in the right direction. I’m a mid 40s male with pretty much no salvagable teeth and am fairly certain surgery will be needed to extract a lot of what is left. It’s probably been around 30 years now since I’ve been to a dentist and the term ‘abject terror’ would be a fair description of my feelings on the subject. Combine this with the fact that I’m being treated for acute anxiety and depression and I hope you’ll understand why I don’t even know where to start looking. I’m writing this now after (during) my latest infection that’s had me screaming into a pillow for the better part of 2 days. I know that I need to get this fixed but was really hoping you could maybe give me some pointers as to how and where to start. I live in the Newcastle upon Tyne area and (I’m sure you will have guessed) am not registered with a dentist currently.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

I can’t afford to pay for my dental treatment, can the NHS help?

June 26th, 2012
Q.

Im a 31 yr old woman. Ive had my teeth treated about 10yrs ago under IV sedation. I have been to a dentist recently who says i have severe peridontal problems. I do not like this dentist and find her un caring about my phobia and how much it took me to come to the dentist in the first place. I cannot afford to move dentists and pay for IV sedation for treatment. Also i was declared bankrupt two yrs ago so a payment plan is out of the question. Can I be refered for help through the NHS or do i have no choice and just need to wait and see my teeth fall out one by one. Im so depressed over this

I have a great phobia of dental treatment which has lead to the deterioration of my oral health, what should I do?

June 12th, 2012
Q.

Hi,

I really need some help and am unsure what to do. I am 32 years old and have only attended a handful of emergency dental appointments since my mid teens due to a phobia. My most recent appointment to the emergency dentist (due to a broken tooth) has led to a referral to an oral surgeon for extraction of the tooth. I have attended the initial consultation and now I am also planned to have one of my wisdom teeth out also.

My problem is, I can’t think of any way possible to attend for this surgery which has been booked for the end of this month. I am absolutely terrified. I know I need this surgery, I have been unable to eat properly for 3 months. But having not had a normal dentist appointment in almost 20 years due to this fear, I feel it has just gone too far. I don’t know what to do.

My primary fears which lead me to avoiding regular dental check-ups are: being trapped in the chair, unable to move; having somebody in my mouth; and feeling like I can’t breathe. In addition to this, the thought of surgery also makes me fear complications that could lead to illness or pain.

What makes this even worse is that I know this is absolutely irrational, and know that given I am a CBT therapist, I should be able to do something about this. However, as is common with all phobias, avoidance is far easier than dealing with the distress…and even when I do try I am just absolutely overwhelmed. Turning to a colleague for help would not be an appropriate course of action.

I do not know what to do. I want this surgery, but am too scared to go through with it. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Any confidence I had has been completely shattered after botched extraction

June 12th, 2012
Q.

Dr.
Hi there and thank you firstly for taking the time to read this. straight in there then I guess. I had a tooth out last year and to say it was a bit messy would be a joke. the numbing stuff didn’t work properly or there wasn’t enough on and the tooth didn’t come out easily- put simply it hurt like hell and lasted longer than it should. the thing is I was never too clever with dentists as it was but as a result of that I haven’t been back since (considering this was about a year and a half ago!) I feel like any confidence I had has been completely shattered. would going to another dentist work do you think or is there anything else i can try n order to build up a bit of confidence?
Anything will help I assume.. Cheers

I feel patronized when learning about my phobia but I haven’t been to the dentist since 2007?

June 8th, 2012
Q.

Hello, I have been on a few dental phobia sites over the last few days and have found that a lot of them are quite patronizing with cartoony pictures on and stuff. I like this site because it doesn’t do this. the problem is I also find a lot of them take the same approach of saying is it this thats wrong(fear of drill…etc) or this? I don’t actually know what Is wrong and it’s annoying me now I haven’t been the dentist since 2007 when I left school because of it. Do you please know of anyway I can begin to outline/define what the issue is and how I can begin to deal with it :( thank you
