Can I have treatment on the NHS and pay for sedation?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr Jennifer Pinder I was wondering if you could advise me please. I have an infected broken tooth and have been to see the dentist to discuss treatment under sedation. The cost was £990 to extract this tooth and 4 other roots (where the tooth has fallen out) deep clean and one filling. I wanted to find out if there was an option to have the treatment done NHS but pay for the sedation. The sedation part cost £200 in this quote the rest was for the treatemnt.
Kind regards

Serious issues with numbing treatments, can you help me please?

December 20th, 2011
Q.

Hi, i am terrified of going to the dentist, in the past the dentists that i have seen have had problems numbing me for treatments that i have needed. The injection itself doesnt bother me however having procedures undertaken under an inadequate anaesthetic does. The last two times i went i had 6 local anaesthetics, 2 of which were into the nerves (apparently my nerves branch into 2) having the nerve injected was extemely painful. I havent been for a couple of years. I now have a tooth missing as it crumbled following a root canal, i have a cracked tooth, and have toothache in a tooth which has a very large filling which last time my dentist said may end up needing a root canal. I know i need to go but i cant bear to pick up the phone. My doctor prescribed me diazepam, but that hasnt helped me to make an appointment. My fear i feel is mainly due to ineffective anaesthetic which means that procedures are painful, and i then end up having nerves injected which is awful, i also dont like the sound of the drill either, as ridiculous as it sounds as soon as i hear a drill i immediately tense up. My ideal would be to have a GA to wake up and have had it all sorted out however i understand that dental procedures arent often done under GA, any advice would be fantastic

How long does it take for sedation to wear off?

December 8th, 2011
Q.

How quickly does sedation wear off? The idea of needing to have this to undergo treatment really gives me the heeby jeebies. I don’t like the idea of being out of control especially if I’m going to have to undergo treatment. Is there anything else that can be done to make dental treatment possible especially the invasive kind? thank you for your time Doctor Nery

Can I be put to sleep while my hygienist cleans my dentures and implants?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

Hello, im having issues with my dentures, not the dentures in-particularly as you will see. You see I have full dentures – lower set supported by implants – the thing id I find having them cleaned by hygienist is extremely painful – have had them for 10 years so should be used to it by now. Would it be possible to be put to sleep whilst having the cleaning done? I don’t want to have to do it again without it, cheers

I need to have a tooth removed but I have a fear of needles, is there any way I can avoid having an injection?

October 21st, 2011
Q.

hello Dr Pinder

can you have sedation without having to have any needles? I really do hate injections of any kind, but i am also (annoyingly) terrified of the dentists, but current pains in the back of my mouth will probably mean that a tooth has to come out. I would prefer to be sedated for the treatment but do not want needles, if it possible to be sedated in an other way?

thank you

I hate dental tools. Please tell me about Healozone and sedative tablets in a bid to avoid them please?

October 7th, 2011
Q.

hi there I absolutely cannot stand the drill/needles and no doubt a few other torture tools the devil dentist has at his disposal! I have always had a bit of a problem with plaque and the way my body reacts to it which apparently is genetic and i can do nothing about, ive been told by my dentist that even regular flossing and brushing may not prevent gum disease. however I have seen the treatment called healozone that prevents decay. I dont mind being at the dentist its just as soon as the tools come out. what tools are involved with the healozone process? and ive heard of a tablet that I can eat and put headphones in to help calm you down? my friend told me this so it could quite easily be not true could you tell me about the healozone thing and what (if it exists) the second thing is? thanks a lot
