I want to help phobic patients and do my bit, where do I start, with regards to training?

Q.
Dear Jennifer,
I have worked in dentistry for 39 years as nurse, receptionist, practice manager and operations manager. I am in the process of taking a Level 4 Counselling and Psychology and a course on Emotional Freedom Therapy. I would like to be able to help dental phobic patients within my practice. Could you suggest any other form of training I could undertake.
Many thanks
Dionne.
A.
Hi Dionne .
what a great mix of courses and training you have .
You are just the sort of person to be helping dental phobics .
kings College Hospital is running a course on CBT for dental patients 2 days ,
google professor Tim Newton and you should find details .
But a great resource is their workbook which you can get from SAAD , sold on their website .
You could start by asking your dentists to flag up some dental phobics and take them through a more in depth assessment ,I suggest two questionnaires that are on my website . www.dentistforphobics.co.uk
This approach to assessment also starts the process of healing , and can get patients to treatment successfully quite quickly .
Hope this helps
Jenny
