I have very sensitive teeth and am worried than a check-up will be painful, what can I do?

December 14th, 2011
Q.

hi

I have highly sensitive teeth, which are delicate to the touch and become worse depending on the temperature. I now feel that one tooth in particular is in need to treatment as it hurts terribly, but am worried about going to the dentist because of my general sensitivity. I cannot imagine the pain of someone poking about in my mouth! is there anything I can do to receive the treatment I need, whilst avoiding excruciating pain?

thank you

My teeth are in terrible shape, what should I suspect from a dental visit?

December 14th, 2011
Q.

Hi.. I have not seen a dentist for 13 years, and now I am suffering I drink too much fizzy probably and at night I grind my teeth, and sometimes in the morning I have bits of broken tooth in my mouth. Most of my teeth have got black by the gums, which is where they are rotting i think, but most of the back ones have holes and are broken literally in half. I am so scared of the dentist to the point my mum has to take my own son! I really want to get them sorted but I would like to know what they would do when i go visit, I am petrified of dentists and of the hook thing cos they always poke it in the holes and it hurts so much, would it be possible for them to not poke and just have a look? Also because my teeth at the side and my wisdoms are broken to a point of non repair what will happen will I be gappy forever or can I have new teeth put in? My wisdom teeth have broken so there is only a little bit left in the gum how would they get it out, please help I am so worried.

I think I need an implant but am worried about the treatment, can you help?

December 12th, 2011
Q.

My tooth crumbled months ago when I had my fixed braces removed. Obviously this was an unprecedented nightmare for me and since then I’ve had to put off treatment because one I couldn’t afford it and two I was scared. My dentist has said about getting an implant. Read up on this and it really scares me. I’m not sure I could do it. Am I needlessly worrying or is there any alternative that is less frightening?

How to do I help my dental phobic 5 year old attend the dentist?

December 9th, 2011
Q.

hello Doctor

I am looking to take me little girl to the dentist, as one of her teeth is really hurting her, but one problem-she’s terrified of the dentist, screaming and bawling and even kicking out at times. She is 5 years old and the tooth is one of her back teeth, which has been keeping her awake and just making her generally upset, so the tooth really does have to come out. I would really appreciate any help and advice you can offer doctor

thanks for reading my email

How long does it take for sedation to wear off?

December 8th, 2011
Q.

How quickly does sedation wear off? The idea of needing to have this to undergo treatment really gives me the heeby jeebies. I don’t like the idea of being out of control especially if I’m going to have to undergo treatment. Is there anything else that can be done to make dental treatment possible especially the invasive kind? thank you for your time Doctor Nery

I have a fear of the dentist and was charged £25 for not attending my appointment, is this fair?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr PInder, I feel really bad about dentists. I have always been a nervous patient and never liked going to the dentist. I think It was on this site where I asked advice before and was told to turn up as close to the appointment as possible. anyway the other day I tried doing just that but somebody must have been having treatment in the room which left me sat in the waiting room. anyway I couldn’t handle it and left, now Ive been charged with an invoice for £25 for missing the appointment. this doesn’t seem fair to me and I don’t know what to to do he was late so should I tell him to shove it!?!? Please help im in an awkward position I even feel pressurised if im just going up to sort this out so ive just ignored him for now!

Does numbing gel remove the need for needles?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hello Simon.. I have had dental phobia all my life, it wasn’t as bad as a child as I didn’t get much choice no matter how I hated it the thing is that now I have that slight choice of having my own responsibility I tend not to want to go and as such haven’t for just over a year!!!! I feel terrible for this and keep meaning to go but its the ‘join the gym at the end of this month’ type thing where the end of the month never comes. I have like a shallow ache in one of my teeth. If i have numbing gel does that mean I wont have to have an injection? because the only thing that surpasses my fear of the dentist is the fear of needles. please help.

I need a tooth extracting, can I have conscious sedation to help me through the procedure?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.

I’ve not been to a dentist for 6 years. The last one i saw could not work on me because i was shaking so much and physically could not let him near me.

I’ve been living with a painful upper wisdom tooth since 2008. Recently the pain has gone to a whole new level so unfortunately a visit is inevitable but I’m putting it off as long as i can. I need the tooth extracted; part already broke off a year ago. It has a root canal which i thought removed the nerves but it’s extremely painful plus the gum around it is inflamed on a regular basis.
I believe the only way i can have this tooth extracted is under GA or the conscious (twilight) sedation widely used in US and SA.

I had a GA in November for an operation so am worried about having another so soon. Can conscious sedation be done at the office as opposed to hospital? What roughly would the cost be? (I don’t want X rays, i just want the tooth out)
I don’t want to book a consult unless i know i can afford the treatment.

Thanks in advance
