What is the correct dose when receiving sedation?
22nd July 2011

I hope you can give me some advice and your opinion? I have been struggling with dental phobia - but I had to go to the dentist 3 weeks ago due to a root infection with facial swelling. I agreed to undergo the extraction under IV sedation which was done last Friday. I don't feel it went well! I don't believe I was sedated - he seemed to struggle to get the drug in. He asked me if I had trouble giving blood as he couldn't find a vein - (I have had a vein go into spasm before when I gave blood) It felt like it took him around 5 minutes to do the IV injection and afterwards I noticed I had two puncture holes on my arm. I was fully aware throughout the whole procedure - I can describe everything that happened including the sensation of my gum being cut either side of the tooth - the sensation of my tooth cracking! The nurse checking my BP! When I left the dentist I only felt slightly dizzy. Could it be that I am not affected by the drug or I believe I only had a small dose, nowhere near enough to sedate me. Previously he has done a local anaesthetic that has made my throat numb and my mouth was unaffected - this has happened twice although I don't feel like he believes me. I am reluctant to ask him about the IV Sedation as I don't feel he will be honest with me but it will affect how I have any future work done. I know it has worked for others from speaking to some of my colleagues!

A. Hello , Im sorry your experience was not as good as you hoped . the two puncture marks m...

Will my children’s teeth end up like mine?
20th July 2011

I have sever dental pain radiating up the side of my head I presently taking codeine but am terrified of the dentist although my life is unbearable due to the pain and the amount of codeine I'm taking is affecting my ability to work safely. I have always had terrible teeth always had filling had 8 teeth removed at 15 as my baby teeth hadn't dropped out. I then had braces and was regularly told of by my dentist and orthodontist. In university when I went to the dental hospital I received a lecture on smoking (which I have never done) but was told that was the reason my teeth were the colour they were. I fear my children will have teeth like me and will have endless fillings, is it possible i have a low dentin level and this is what makes my teeth so fragile (my mother wanted to have my teeth coated and the dentist informed her it was a load of nonsense. I just don't want my children to go through what I have if it is unnecessary.

A. Im sorry about you dental difficulties . Firstly your children , fortunately most children...

11th July 2011

Hello Doctor, Just want to say thanks first for taking the time to read my email. Ok, so I have been scared of the dentist since I was little, with a combination of painful experiences and a bit of a scare in connection with sedation to obviously I have pretty much avoided the dentist for the last 15 years. My teeth are in pretty bad shape, as a number of cavities have had the chance to take hold and i really at a loose end to what to do as i need them treating but i also fear being put under in case i never wake up. What would you suggest to help me relax and get through my visits? thank you very, very much for your time and any help you can give

My teeth are in really bad shape, but I am too scared to visit the dentist.
7th July 2011

Hi Jennifer I am writing to you in the hope that you can help me. I am a 27 year old female from the Midands. You are the first Dentist I have come across both online and in person that seems approachable and friendly. The way my teeth look at the moment is seriously effecting my confidence. I cant bear to talk to people outside in the daylight because they will notice how awful my teeth look. The main problem is my bottom teeth - my gum and bone have deteriorated really badly over the last two years. The front 3 teeth have risen up and are now so tall in my mouth they hit the roof of my mouth when I eat. They are also incredibly loose which means I haven't actually bitten into food for several years for fear of losing them. I have to cut everything up into tiny portions so I don't use my front teeth. As well as being much higher than the other bottom teeth, they are also dramatically different in colour and whatever I do - I cant seem to make them look any cleaner. Slowly but surely their appearance has eaten away any confidence I had and I am now struggling to socialise - keep my relationship going and keep my job. It is hard to convey in an email just how badly this is effecting my life. I have attempted to resolve the problem but I was just so terrified and the 3 different dentists that I saw were very rude to me and one even said ' you take care of the rest of yourself by the looks of things - why have you not taken care of your teeth'? One Dentist referred me to the BIrmingham dental hospital and the first appointment was fine but then I knew she was going to inject me and touch my front teeth at the next appointment and I just could not make myself go in. I am sorry for the long babbling email - I just need to know if you can give me any advice on a few things? I need to see a dentist for a deep clean but I am really scared of anyone touching my teeth. Do yo know of any in Warwickshire that may offer sedation? I also desperately want to have the front 3 bottom teeth in my mouth removed. I would like to have a bridge but if this isn't possible - implants. The problem I have is finance - I have no savings. Is there anything the NHS would do for me? I just feel totally down about the whole thing at the moment and see no end in sight. If I can find a way of getting these unsightly teeth out of my mouth and replaced with normal ones - it would literally change my life. Sorry again for the length of this email! I hope to hear from you soon Many thanks

A. Hello You sound really depressed about your teeth , but the good thing is that you are act...

Can you find me a good dentist to help with my problems and my fear?
16th June 2011

I need to find a dentist in Hampshire who is good with phobia and stressed clients. I have multiple problems and have actually stopped mixing with people because of the state of my mouth. I had a 7 part bridge 6 years ago which went badly wrong and I now have multiple rotten teeth and advanced gum disease. I am absolutely terrified and actually feel sick writing this. I know I cannot go on much longer with these problems but finding a dentist who can help gives me 'brain fog' . I am a pensioner but have looked into taking a loan out to pay for my treatment.

A. You have made a start by putting your thoughts on paper . You may be looking at having ex...
