How do I get my dental phobic 10-year-old to the dentist?

October 2nd, 2012
Q.

My daughter is 10 years old and has had a few “bad” experiences at the dentist since she was 4!. She has had two teeth extracted after injection with no problems but still was quite a big thing for her at such a young age … injections etc. She then had to have some fissure seals done and unfortunately the dentist treating her did not give her a break and because she is anxious she stopped breathing properly, and had some kind of seizure/fit in the dentist chair, it was diagnosed as a feint after investigations but the whole process has left her traumatised about visiting the dentist. I did manage to get her back there once but she wouldnt sit in the dentist chair and after the quickest examination ever she then felt dizzy and had to sit outside. I now do not know quite how to get her back to the dentist, she hasnt been for a year now and yesterday one of her baby back teeth broke in half!! I quite literally do not know what to do as it will no doubt be another visit with trauma which will reinforce her phobia…. HELP!.

Last time I went to the dentist the treatment options frightened me, how can I overcome my fear?

October 2nd, 2012
Q.

I have a fear of dentists because of the pain and the embarrassment that my teeth are so bad. The last time I went to the dentist they gave me options for my teeth, all not good. I can’t get myself to go back to the dentist and my teeth are not getting better. I am 31 yrs old. How can I over come my fear and deep anxiety?

Are injections issued in the front of the mouth more painful?

September 11th, 2012
Q.

Hi Jenny, I was wondering if you could give me a little advice on something? I haven’t been to the dentist in around 5 years and have finally made myself an appointment. My front tooth is displaying signs of decay which obviously needs looking in to. I am petrified about what’s going to happen. I know it’s just a check-up I am attending first but what if the tooth needs removing? I am so scared of this being the case. Also, I’ve heard that injections issued at the front of the mouth are much more painful. My practice is NHS so I feel my dentist won’t make any special efforts to make me feel at ease and will do a botch job. Please give me some advice. Thank you in advance!

I am worried about visiting my new dentist, what should I expect?

September 11th, 2012
Q.

I chipped my tooth today and so I’m going to the dentist in two days.

The last time I went to the dentist, I had a tooth taken out and it all went smoothly.

However, this time I will be going to a new dentist and I’m worried that they will not be as gentle as my old one was.
I had finally found a dentist that made me feel at ease and now I’m worried that this new dentist will make this experience unpleasant.

What should I expect?

Is there a way to test if you’ll have a bad reaction to sedation treatment?

September 7th, 2012
Q.

Hi, is there a way to test if you’ll have a bad reaction to sedation treatment? My friend had a few teeth pulled out when she was younger and told me that she had a weird reaction to the sedation. She said that they struggled waking her up and they had to use a heart monitor to make sure she was okay. I’m petrified, as I’ve requested sedation to have 2 wisdom teeth extracted. What are the chances of something like that happening to me too?

I am trying to find someone who can offer me analgesia, can you help me?

September 3rd, 2012
Q.

I had nightmare permanent molar extractions (4) as a child to allow crooked front lower and upper teeth to ‘spread out’. I was given no anaesthesia whatsoever. Subsequently, even massive amounts of gum injections failed adequately to numb. Various dentists told me my gum nerves ‘went in unusual ways’ and became angry and frustrated with me. Eventually, I found a dentist who was a retired Dentistry Prof from Liverpool dentistry school, running a dental surgery as a ‘leisure activity’! He diagnosed me as dental phobic, saying that my body was blocking the effects of the injections. He gave me ‘alternate analgesia’ ( a light scented gas which left me happy and conscious). I amazingly used to actually look forward to going to him for treatment. Then he totally retired. Recently I broke a lower molar and was told the only analgesia offered nowadays was sedation costing £195! I cannot afford this for every dental visit on top of the cost of the dental treatment. There is an acute shortage of NHS dentists in my area (Kirklees), and my previous NHS dentist crossed me off her list whilst I was abroad for 3 years, so had to go private for this broken tooth. I was given 8 injections in total; I became extremely lightheaded and on the point of collapse, but the tooth was still not completely numbed, so I had to suffer an agonising extraction. I feel I have come full circle back to where I was as a child and am terrified of another dental visit. Can you PLEASE help or advise?

I have been a dental phobic since I was 5, would you consider treating me?

September 3rd, 2012
Q.

Dear Jenny, I have been a dental phobic since I was 5, following an awful dental visit. I have had some dental treatment since at my Mothers insistence, but when I left home I rarely had dental check ups. I haven’t been able to visit a dentist fro years. I believe I need considerable dental treatment, many extractions etc. I have recently been to my local a and e for i.v antibiotics following an abscess which distorted the right side of my face. I need to begin treatments and to attempt to help myself with this phobia, would you consider treating me? Many thanks.

I’m visiting the dentist for the first time in 10 years and I am petrified! Do you have any advice for me?

August 30th, 2012
Q.

My mum has booked me a dental appointment, first one in 10 years after being butchered in the past. I have been suffering alot over recent years, with 5 broken teeth with rough jagged edges and having had linked abcesses with all broken teeth, but I am still very frightened, although the pain in unbearable and eating impossible, what sort of thing can i expect from my intial appointment and check up? Will they have to do, Im too scared of pain and blood and having no teeth.
