How can I deal with my dental phobia?

November 26th, 2012
Q.

Hi there I have a really big fear of the dentist ever since I had a really bad experience when I was 14. I’m 27 now and my teeth are in a really bad state some have crumbled away and some are broken. I have had a dental abscess for sometime and I’ve just been taking pain killers to mask the pain but now I can’t take it much more, but I’m still scared of seeing a dentist. I’m scared of being in that chair and being judged for how bad my teeth are. But, I’m also worried I won’t be able to afford the treatment done I didn’t know where to start but I came across this website and thought this could be a good place to start for advice and guidance on what to do, thank you.

I am worried about visiting my new dentist, what should I expect?

September 11th, 2012
Q.

I chipped my tooth today and so I’m going to the dentist in two days.

The last time I went to the dentist, I had a tooth taken out and it all went smoothly.

However, this time I will be going to a new dentist and I’m worried that they will not be as gentle as my old one was.
I had finally found a dentist that made me feel at ease and now I’m worried that this new dentist will make this experience unpleasant.

What should I expect?

I feel patronized when learning about my phobia but I haven’t been to the dentist since 2007?

June 8th, 2012
Q.

Hello, I have been on a few dental phobia sites over the last few days and have found that a lot of them are quite patronizing with cartoony pictures on and stuff. I like this site because it doesn’t do this. the problem is I also find a lot of them take the same approach of saying is it this thats wrong(fear of drill…etc) or this? I don’t actually know what Is wrong and it’s annoying me now I haven’t been the dentist since 2007 when I left school because of it. Do you please know of anyway I can begin to outline/define what the issue is and how I can begin to deal with it :( thank you

I can’t bring myself to make an appointment at the dentist in over a year?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello Dear expert. I was wondering If you could help me out. I know somebody who asked advise on here that I know personally has really helped her. this has been the sole reason I am trying to tackle my fear now as I’ve seen it all but done. I was reminded that I had not had an appointment in over a year, this made me feel really bad- like i needed to amend it but I can’t?I don’t know why? I never had any bad experiences as a child I purely just cannot remember ever liking the dentist. is there anything I can do to get around this, its possibly anxiety but I don’t know? thanks

Is it possible to have a tooth extracted without the use of needles?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello Jennifer :-) I amassed the courage to pop to the dentist yesterday morning! it took a lot of doing as my nerves get the better of me, I’ll be stood in my house pacing, deciding whether to go and more often than not ive walked right to the shop- past the dentist, and bought some things then gone home. the other day though I forced myself in and was instantly reminded why I hadn’t been, I sat trying to regulate my breathing and be calm, the dentist though when I was in the treatment room identified a tooth that needs pulling and has subsequently booked and appointment where I can have this done. Terrified is not the word! I was always a little apprehensive of the dentist but never as much as I was of needles! will I have to encounter a needle at some point when having a tooth extracted or are there other ways of doing whatever it is the needle is there to achieve? any help would be amazing than you so much

I need braces but can’t get to the dentist. Advice?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello Dr Jennifer Pinder I am seventeen, I am working and have saved up some money to get braces behind my teeth. the thing is I hate dentists. I know I have to have the brace as my teeth are badly crossed. the problem that I have is that I don’t now where the actual problem lies? I hear ‘dentist appointment’ and I’m like yeah OK that’s cool but as soon as the day in question arrives I get really nervous as if I have a big show or something. this gets worse and worse as I get closer to the dentist until I’m inside and I feel likeI’m being watched and can’t sit still. last time I just walked back out! is there anything you could suggest as either the route of this problem or even how to get over it that would be brilliant cheers
