I had a bad experience with brace treatment and haven’t been to the dentist in 7 years, what should I do?

October 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi,

Ever since having braces in my teens I have been terrified of dentists and have not been for 7 years. I have started getting quite large dark patches/holes on my teeth and its really affecting me as I am too scared to see a dentist. I know I need to do it but I am so scared and also I am worried about my financial situation at the same time which doesnt help.

What can I do?

It’s been a decade since I went to the dentist and I don’t know what will happen if I go back?

May 11th, 2012
Q.

Hello,

It’s been a very long time since I visited a dentist (around a decade!) & I’m absolutely terrified of trying to see one now after so long as I’m frightened about getting shouted at, I’m terrified about how much treatment my teeth might now need (although I’ve not had any toothaches, or unusual pains etc) – I do have a little gum disease which I’m trying to treat myself with brushing regularly & with special mouthwash.

How common is this sort of scenario? I want to be able to go & see a dentist & get back into the system but I’m feeling so frightened about what may happen. Help please?

Thank you!

I’ve always been scared of dentist but after a move and a nasty dentist I hate them even more?

April 18th, 2012
Q.

I have always been slightly scared of dental appointments but always kept up my treatment. Due to moving I have just returned in tears and very scared after my new appointment. I have an impacted upper wisdom tooth. I am in great pain and although I did get given antibiotics I have no faith in the dentist. As I am 55 I fear treatment will be needed and can’t face another dentist. I have never been made to feel so stupid and have never been shouted at by a professional before. Even though I have been recommended different dentists by friends they are not Nhs. Please could you advise what my next step could be.

I am struggling to overcome a fear of dentist. Can you please help?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

I am struggling to overcome my fear of the dentist. I used to have a serious fear of needles and refused to have jabs at high school. I managed to overcome that fear last year when I went out to Africa as they are an absolute must. (I am not properly over them they still make me squirm but where absolutely need be I can just deal with it so long as there’s no cue and I’m jabbed and done quickly! however my fear of the dentist somewhat surpasses this. I used to think I didn’t like it as I may have needed a needle but it must obviously go beyond that? I’d like to know how to go about dealing with this please if you have any suggestions? thanks a lot in advance, your time is greatly appreciated

After cancer and all that comes with it I need to sort my teeth out but don’t like dentists, what can I do?

December 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hi I was diagnosed with cancer 8 years ago and went through chemotherapy, during this period i had a number of side effects one of which was extensive vomitting, and recently i have had to go through further radiotherapy which caused the same side effect. this has led to very bad teeth erosion, where some of my teeth are wasting away and some broken. i am very embarrased with this and have feared visiting a dentist, i would love to smile again and have nice teeth but the embarassment and fear off going to a dentist has overtaken me. Could you please advise if there is treatment available so i am able to have a nice smile again, i am still fairly young (37) and feel am at the point where i am prepared to go to a dentist now who is understanding.

I need braces but can’t get to the dentist. Advice?

November 28th, 2011
Q.

hello Dr Jennifer Pinder I am seventeen, I am working and have saved up some money to get braces behind my teeth. the thing is I hate dentists. I know I have to have the brace as my teeth are badly crossed. the problem that I have is that I don’t now where the actual problem lies? I hear ‘dentist appointment’ and I’m like yeah OK that’s cool but as soon as the day in question arrives I get really nervous as if I have a big show or something. this gets worse and worse as I get closer to the dentist until I’m inside and I feel likeI’m being watched and can’t sit still. last time I just walked back out! is there anything you could suggest as either the route of this problem or even how to get over it that would be brilliant cheers
