What will happen when I get my tooth extracted?

February 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr,
I had a tooth extracted before Christmas but my dentist couldn’t get all the tooth out. He struggles for a while but said that the root wasn’t straight so would send me to hospital instead. i found the experience very traumatic with lots of needle injections over and over because I could feel him trying to remove the tooth.
My main question is, what will they do at the hospital? He said something about sedation in my hand? Could you possible explain what this all means so that I am prepared more for when I get the appointment? many thanks.

I am afraid to have sedation

February 19th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I have extreme phobia of needles and dentists, dental equipment ect the whole lot. I recently had a check up after 17 years, it took me alot to do this and I had a nervous break down in the dentist, I got told i needed 3 fillings and that my wisdom tooth is coming through on a funny angle, not sure if its impacted or not. My dentist referred me to be sedated but there is no way under any circumstances i can be awake or even partly awake when having dental treatment done, not even sedated, i just cant do it. My anxiety and depression from knowing i need this treatment is to the max, I can’t cope with it, I need this done but i need to be asleep completely. I dont want to be in pain in the future with my teeth but i will have to if there is no way of me being put to sleep, I am so worried and nervous, i am currently on anti-depressants and diazepam for this and its not helping at all, i have lost so much weight, as i find it hard to eat now, cant sleep, always feeling sick to the stomach due to fear, it is getting too much for me, this is my last hope is being under GA. Please help
Thank you for your time.

I am petrified of the dentist and it makes me physically sick

February 7th, 2013
Q.

Hello. I was hit in the face a while back, they temporarily repaired my tooth. But now it needs a root canal. I had to register with a dentist. He didn’t know have petrified i am of the dentist. I have no bigger fear than my fear of the dentist. I am terrified. It took a hour to inject my mouth, which didn’t work because i was already so scared. I’m up being sick and loose control of my bowels the night before. I would rather anything happened to me, than visit a dentist. Is there anything i can do as they said i cant be put asleep. But they will put me asleep for a filling. I desperately need help. I look forward to hearing from you because otherwise I really don’t know what i am meant to do.Thank you.

Is there a way to test if you’ll have a bad reaction to sedation treatment?

September 7th, 2012
Q.

Hi, is there a way to test if you’ll have a bad reaction to sedation treatment? My friend had a few teeth pulled out when she was younger and told me that she had a weird reaction to the sedation. She said that they struggled waking her up and they had to use a heart monitor to make sure she was okay. I’m petrified, as I’ve requested sedation to have 2 wisdom teeth extracted. What are the chances of something like that happening to me too?

Any confidence I had has been completely shattered after botched extraction

June 12th, 2012
Q.

Dr.
Hi there and thank you firstly for taking the time to read this. straight in there then I guess. I had a tooth out last year and to say it was a bit messy would be a joke. the numbing stuff didn’t work properly or there wasn’t enough on and the tooth didn’t come out easily- put simply it hurt like hell and lasted longer than it should. the thing is I was never too clever with dentists as it was but as a result of that I haven’t been back since (considering this was about a year and a half ago!) I feel like any confidence I had has been completely shattered. would going to another dentist work do you think or is there anything else i can try n order to build up a bit of confidence?
Anything will help I assume.. Cheers

I feel that sedation will help me, should I ask to be referred to a hospital?

May 29th, 2012
Q.

I have an appointment tomorrow, and I suffer from dental phobia. It has taken a lot to get even this far with regards to the appointment.
I know I have a problem with a tooth that may need to be removed. I really feel that sedation can help me, but it’s not done at my surgery. How do I go about getting sedation?
Do I have a right to ask for a referral to hospital? Or may I have to fight to get it?
Thank you
