I haven’t visited the dentist in over 9 years because of my extreme dental phobia, what should I do?

Q.

Hello there Dr, I am 37 and I haven’t been to a dentist in over 9 years because of my fear of going. I really hope you can try and help me with my problem. I have been suffering a lot with tooth pain lately but am so scared to visit a dentist I was wondering if I asked for a sedative they would agree? I don’t think I can do it without it because I had a very bad time the last time I went to a dentist and it has scared me a lot I don’t want to suffer pain much longer. I know I need to over come my fears and I am really trying. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you for any help in advance.

I had a previous negative experience with a dental crown and a cracked tooth. Will it happen again?

Q.

Hello, I underwent some dental treatment several years ago which was supposed to be a simple crown but this turned into a huge disaster. As I was receiving the treatment and thought everything was fine I felt my neighboring tooth crack and a large part of it came off and I could feel it inside my mouth. I then had to have more dental work (a few days later) but I was in a lot of pain. I still don’t know exactly what happened and it really frightened me. I’m planning on having another crown replaced in a few weeks and I’m petrified that something similar will happen again. Do you know what caused this to happen? Thanks.

How to do I help my dental phobic 5 year old attend the dentist?

December 9th, 2011
Q.

hello Doctor

I am looking to take me little girl to the dentist, as one of her teeth is really hurting her, but one problem-she’s terrified of the dentist, screaming and bawling and even kicking out at times. She is 5 years old and the tooth is one of her back teeth, which has been keeping her awake and just making her generally upset, so the tooth really does have to come out. I would really appreciate any help and advice you can offer doctor

thanks for reading my email
