How can I get over my fear of sitting in the dentists chair?

Hello doctor,
I would really like some help with my fear of sitting in the dentists chair. Before the appointment I feel ok but as soon as I get in the chair I start to feel anxious and my heart starts beating quickly and I feel like I am going to pass out. is there a way of getting dental treatment without sitting in the chair, so maybe standing up? I am too embarrassed to ask my dentist if this is possible. Any help that you can give me would be a great help, thanks.

Hello, Its sitting in the chair at the dentist thats your problem and not whether you are standing or sitting .
Your brain is telling your body that you feel under threat and the fight or flight reaction is setting in .
The panicky feeling will settle down as you sit and just take a few deep breaths , you wont pass out .
Anxiety is an uncomfortable feeling though .
Maybe ask the dentist for a mild sedative tablet to take to help you . 5 mgm of valium can be very helpful here .
Hope this helps
Jenny
