How Can I Overcome My Phobia?

Dear Dr Pinder, I have multiple teeth missing and rotten broken teeth still present. I can’t bring myself to attend a dentist, I haven’t been for over 20 years. The fear and embarrassment is overwhelming. What do you advise please?

I’m sorry you find yourself in this situation.
It sounds as if you would really like to do something about this but don’t know how to start.
Embarrassment is a big barrier, but it can be overcome. Dentists have seen all sorts of people and they are there to help you, not judge or criticise.
But nothing will change unless you take the first steps. Have a look at www.dentalfearcentral.org for some support. Look around for a dentist, perhaps one that does IV sedation and may be more attuned to people like yourself.
Make the appointment, perhaps take someone along for moral support and tell the receptionist that you are very nervous. Just take one step at a time. I hope this helps a bit, Jenny.
