I have an overwhelming fear of the dentist

Hello Dr Maini,
In the past year or so I have started to have an overwhelming fear of the dentist. The main problem is the pain when I have injections. I tense up and it really hurts, I have even cried from the pain. I need to get a filling and I didn’t go to my appointment for it because of this issue. I go to an NHS dentist and I know they don’t have any specialised treatment if you are scared of going to the dentist. Is there anything I can have to numb my mouth that isn’t a needle? Last time that I had a needle I could still feel the tooth and gums even after probably nearly ten injections in the area. I have heard about sedation where they put a needle in your hand but there is no way that i will have that done because of the needle element. Please help.

Sadly there isn’t

Phycology has a lot to do with pain perception and the anticipation of pain. Dental sedation may be a way to assist you with your anxieties and maybe something you look at to help. Good luck :-)
