I have anxiety attacks before I see the dentist, what can I do?

hello simon do you think you could help me please, I never though I had dental phobia as I’d never considered it before now, to be honest I thought it was just me? I have looked across this site but things like fear of the drill and fear of choking have never been the case with me it happens before i get in the treatment room, to be honest once im in there im not too bad its too late if you will its just getting me in there that’s the issue. have there been any cases you have dealt with whereby this has been the case, patients being scared before getting to the treatment room and how have you gone about helping them as I dont know whereto start. any help is help, thanks

It sounds like you are just having anxiety attacks before going in – this is very common and can often be helped by taking some anti anxiety medication ( eg rescue remedy is a herbal version which many people find helps)
You could ask a friend or member of your family to come with you,and if you saw your doctor they may be able to refer you to someone who could help with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
it would also help to stick with your current dentist ( presuming you are happy with them) and discuss this with them as I am sure they would be sympathetic and keen to help.

I hope this is helpful – remember what you are feeling is common!
