What are the best treatments available for a dental phobic patient?
hello, can i ask, what are the best treatments available for people who have dental phobia, I myself have a particular fear of going into the treatment room I feel like a lamb to slaughter. the fear is then extended to the waiting room- and even when I have tried to just arrive in time, it is extended because I know the fear is a bout to kick in and that in itself makes me nervous like a knock on effect. I don’t know what to call it but that’s the only way I can portray what the issue is by telling you how it happens, for this what would you say are potential treatments. I feel silly but I know it cant go on for the sake of my mouth/teeth and health. I eagerly await any response- which I will appreciate hugely. cheers
Hi
You sound as if you have some understanding of your problem.
Fear of fear , breeds more fear .
Can you analyse what you fear once you get into the treatment room , obviously this has now generalised further away from the original fear .
What may help you is making enquiries from your dr about getting some Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT).
A very useful self help resource is a book called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for dummies .
Some of the ideas in that may strike a chord with you and help to start your ability to cope with going to the dentist
