How Can I Rectify My Gum Disease Problem?
31st May 2016

Hi Jennifer, I am in a bad state. I neglected my teeth while depressed. I have dental phobia and went to an NHS dentist who told me I had gum disease and wanted to extract 4 teeth, but only replace one tooth at the side. I had a panic attack, I did not go back. I had already lost about a tooth a decade, 4 in all, one of my teeth came out complete with root before Christmas. I am only eating with my front teeth, because I have missing molars at the bottom right and loose molars top left. There is nowhere I can eat comfortably because I have no real chewing surface. I have very bad gum bleeding from time to time. I am worried this situation cannot be rectified and this is impacting severely on my quality of life.

A. You could seek a second opinion. The gum disease is the first thing that should be addres...

Will Valium Help My Husband Breathe During an Extraction?
17th May 2016

Hi, my husband badly needs root canal work on his back tooth (penultimate one). However, he finds it difficult to breathe through his nose and doesn't see how he can sit through the process if he can't breathe. He's thinking of having it extracted but I'm uneasy about this option because of the knock-on effects. The dentist suggested Valium. Yes, that would curb the anxiety but if he can't breathe....

A. Hello. I understand your concerns for your husband. However it's his treatment and him tha...

Where Can I Find an NHS Dentist for Nervous Patients?
17th May 2016

I have just sat on the floor about to end it all just because of my dental phobia. I am getting bullied by people I don't know in the street, judgmental stares, comments yelled at me and all because of my teeth. I have none left on the left 2 huge decayed buck teeth with huge overbite. I tried going to an NHS dentist after 9 months on the waiting list here in Blackpool and got told basically we have no time for phobics we recommend you go private as there is a big demand for your place on our books. After being so brave to walk in I get told that. I need sedation, I need trust. I have rang and emailed every dentist locally and not one is taking on unless I pay them plenty. I have no job, no friends who can take me further afield and I am agoraphobic because of being judged. If I had perfect teeth I'd be so happy as the only thing stops me living my life is my horrific teeth. I don't know where to turn or if there is anywhere? My GP said she can't help me as it's a dentist I need. Help!

A. You must tell your GP that you are having suicidal thoughts because of your teeth. It soun...

How Can I Get Over My Dental Anxiety and Sensitive Gag Reflex?
16th May 2016

Years ago I had a badly fitted bridge, which caused numerous problems after visiting many dentists, none of which helped very much. I was having an impression taken and the dentist sprayed something in my throat to stop me balking as I have a very sensitive palette. This made me feel like I was choking, as some of the mixture went into my throat and started to set and I had to physically pull it out. I was terrified, never been back to the dentist since. For a couple of years I kept the bridge in but now what's left of my teeth are so decayed I'm constantly getting infections and my quality of life has gone downhill, as I've lost all confidence. I'm even on verge of losing my job as I work with the public and eating is a nightmare but I don't know what to do as I balk even just to open my mouth for the dentist to look in - what can I do?

A. I'm so sorry you have found yourself in this dilemma . Of course you have to go to the den...

I am trying to find a dentist who can give me an injection in my arm to put me asleep for all dental work. Can you help? Thanks for your time. I'm in Kent but will travel.

I Have a Phobia of the Dental X-Ray Plate. What Should I Do?
19th April 2016

I have multiple phobias about the dentist due to bad experiences and having Asperger's. One of my phobias is the x-ray plate. When the instrument is put in my mouth, I feel as if I am going to choke to death. I have difficulty following instructions on how to position the instrument in my mouth because of my Asperger's. The phobia started after a dentist trapped my tongue under the plate. I was fine with it before this happened. It took several attempts to get the plate inside my mouth the last time I needed an x-ray and the dentist nearly gave up. If I ever need this procedure again, are there any adjustments the dentist can make for me?

A. Hello.  There is an answer to your problem. You will have to find a dental practice, or g...

Can I Have My Tooth Extracted Under General Anaesthetic?
11th April 2016

Hi. Many of the questions here echo my own issues. I really fear the dentist. You said about finding a good, patient one, but my first was the best in his clinic and I was scared of him too. Went back years later and now my teeth are really bad, broken and miscoloured. Can I go somewhere, get completely knocked out, asleep and unaware, have what I have left taken out of my mouth then get some dentures? Not dental implants, good dentures I can take out and clean by hand at night. Brushing makes me gag and I need to fix this. I can't smile and have no confidence at all. Please help. Anything with zero mouth pain. I can handle the arm needle that puts me to sleep. But nothing in my mouth.

A. Hello. Yes it would be possible to have all your teeth out under a general anesthetic in h...

How Can I Get Past My Dental Phobia?
11th April 2016

I am terrified, just writing this to you is make my heart thump, but I need to do something. The last time I visited the dentist was in 1976 and whilst I was wary then, I really didn't have the fear I have now. A colleague and I were going through similar procedures (different dentist) at the same time and unfortunately she died under anaesthetic. Now I know that this was an extreme case, however over the years my phobia has just increased and unfortunately I have recently suffered depression where I haven't been caring for myself at all well. I am a sensible person really and I can't get past this awful, awful feeling, embarrassment too, how stupid I feel etc. How can I get past this please?

A. I think that you would come into the category of a very severe dental phobic. That has not...

What Happens During a Surgical Extraction?
11th April 2016

My dentist couldn't extract my tooth last week as it kept breaking and they have referred me for a surgical extraction. I am so nervous, I was shaking like a leaf whilst my dentist was trying to take it out last week and I'm terrified of it happening during the surgical extraction. It's being done under local anaesthetic. I also had a panic attack afterwards. The dentist was lovely and very caring, but I'm worried about what will happen with the oral surgeon. I try so hard to stay in control and not get so anxious but my body just takes over and shakes. I feel so stupid. What happens at a surgical extraction and is there anything I can do to help me cope?

A. Hello. The extraction procedure done by the oral surgeon will be quite similar. They are h...
